GTA 6 Gameplay Features: Everything Officially Revealed So Far

Almost everything officially known about GTA 6 gameplay comes from one source: the Extended Look Rockstar released on August 27, 2026, a 26-minute presentation captured entirely from in-game PlayStation 5 footage, plus the hands-off previews major outlets published from it. That footage, the two trailers and Rockstar’s own site are the only places gameplay has actually been shown. This guide lists the features those sources confirm: dual-protagonist switching with a co-op-style tag-along system, story choices that change how events play out, a wildlife system with more than 170 species, and the longest confirmed activities list the series has ever had. Leak-era mechanics that Rockstar has never shown are kept in their own section at the end, clearly marked, because most “GTA 6 features” lists online mix the two together. For the reveal itself, start with our GTA 6 trailer breakdown.

Dual Protagonists: Character Switching and Playing Together

The core system is built around two playable leads, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, and a selection wheel with three modes: Solo Jason, Solo Lucia, and dual control when the two are together. Switching works in the open world and inside missions, and previews describe it as available at almost any time rather than only at scripted points. The bigger change is what happens after you switch. You can ask the other character to tag along, and the pair can explore, shop, work out, go on dates and even pull robberies together, with the AI partner acting independently. Preview footage also showed the pair in one car during a chase, with control able to move between the driver and the passenger. Rockstar originally considered four playable leads before settling on two, specifically to keep the emotional connection between the pair at the centre of the game.

GTA 6 Story Choices and Robbery Approaches

Rockstar told preview outlets that choices, both big and small, can significantly change the direction of the story, which is a first for a mainline GTA campaign. The system shows most clearly in robberies: a score can be attempted alone or with your partner, and approached quietly or aggressively, and the game supports the attempt either way rather than failing you into one scripted route. The relationship between Jason and Lucia is part of the same design. Spending time together on activities strengthens their bond, and previews report that the bond affects how certain story segments unfold. What it does not do, per the same previews, is grant gameplay bonuses: there is no stat reward for playing the relationship one way or another, so the choices stay narrative rather than turning into a second progression system.

The Leonida Open World: Six Regions and a Bigger Role for Water

Leonida is, in art director Aaron Garbut’s words from the preview coverage, around twice the size of GTA 5’s map, and it is split across the six official regions covered in our GTA 6 map guide: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga. The feature the Extended Look kept returning to is water. Leonida’s coastline, swamps and waterways are working space, not scenery: boats, jet skis, kayaks, airboats and scuba gear all appear as usable transport and activities, and the Grassrivers wetlands are built around airboat travel and wildlife rather than roads. On land, the world stretches from Vice City’s neon strips to farms, ranches, ATV trails and mud parks, which is why the confirmed activities list below reads less like a minigame menu and more like a state tourism board.

GTA 6 Wildlife System: 170 Species, a Study Checklist and Hunting

The wildlife system is the deepest Rockstar has confirmed outside Red Dead Redemption 2. Leonida holds more than 170 animal species, including over 60 types of bird and more than 30 land mammals, and animals in the wild or at the zoo can be studied and added to a personal checklist, the same observe-and-catalogue loop RDR2 used. Domestic animals are interactive too: previews confirm dogs can be petted, scolded, or fed treats bought at convenience stores. Hunting is officially listed for Mount Kalaga National Park, the region Rockstar describes as home to far deadlier predators, and fishing appears in official screenshots and preview activity lists, though Rockstar has not detailed its mechanics. The full species picture, including which animals are confirmed and which are only spotted, is in our GTA 6 animals and wildlife guide.

Confirmed GTA 6 Activities and Minigames

Every activity below was shown in the Extended Look, listed by Rockstar, or reported from the official previews. They group naturally by where Leonida puts them.

Where Confirmed activities
Water Kayaking, jet skiing, air boating, scuba diving, fishing, underwater shipwreck treasure hunting
Land and sport Gym workouts, basketball, pool, mini golf, hunting, zoo visits, backyard wrestling
Vehicles Street racing, off-road racing, dirt-bike racing, stock-car racing, monster truck racing, ATV trails, motocross, demolition derbies, mountain biking
Air and thrill Parachuting, base jumping, shooting challenges

Two honest footnotes matter here. First, three activities fans expected are confirmed NOT to be full minigames: tennis, surfing and skateboarding were left out, according to the preview coverage, to protect the quality of everything else. Second, the driving side of the list is only half the story: the machines themselves, from the Shitzu Bati 801 to the police Buffalo STX Pursuit, are catalogued in our GTA 6 cars and vehicles guide.

Combat, Weapons and Police: What the Footage Actually Shows

The Extended Look redesigned the series’ weapon wheel: it now separates weapons from items, toggled with R1 on PlayStation or RB on Xbox, and footage shows hand-switching, firing with the left or right hand depending on cover and angle. Police pursuits feature heavily in the footage, with marked and pursuit-spec vehicles chasing both protagonists across the city and the Keys. This section is deliberately shorter than the others, because Rockstar has shown combat and chases without explaining their rules. The wanted system in particular has not been detailed: claims online about permanent evidence databases, officers remembering your car or your face between encounters, and similar systems come from leak analysis, not from anything Rockstar has published, and they belong in the unconfirmed section below.

Phones and Social Media Inside GTA 6

Leonida’s residents film everything. In-game social media has been part of GTA 6’s identity since Trailer 1 opened with clips shot by characters inside the world, and the Extended Look kept cutting to phone-shot footage of street races, stunts and crimes filmed by bystanders. Preview coverage names an in-world phone app, WAiNK, tied to the city’s car culture, including surfacing the cost of registering a stolen vehicle and its estimated resale value. The practical read is that your phone is a gameplay tool and the world’s camera at the same time: what you do in public can end up on someone else’s feed. Exactly how deep that system runs at launch, Rockstar has not fully explained.

What Is NOT Confirmed: Leak Claims and Confirmed Absences

Two different lists get merged online, so here they are separately. Confirmed absent at launch, from Rockstar itself: GTA 6 is single-player only on November 19, with no GTA Online mode at launch; there is no PC version and no early access for any edition. Not confirmed at all, however often they are repeated: a percentage of enterable buildings (the “70 percent of buildings” figure has no Rockstar source), a police evidence and memory database, dual-wielding weapons, a body-weight and muscle system carried over from San Andreas, and fuel management for vehicles. Some of those may still turn out to be in the finished game. None of them has been shown or stated by Rockstar, and a features list that prints them as confirmed is guessing. The countdown to the day the answers arrive is on our GTA 6 release countdown.
