When Did Minecraft Come Out?

Swedish developer Markus Persson released the first public version of Minecraft on May 17, 2009. Players could buy it while it was still being built, and the finished game, version 1.0, launched on November 18, 2011. Microsoft bought Mojang Studios in 2014 for $2.5 billion, and Minecraft has since sold more than 300 million copies, more than any other video game.

Java Edition vs Bedrock Edition: What Is the Difference?

  • Java Edition runs on Windows, Mac and Linux. It is the home of mods, custom servers and most technical redstone builds.
  • Bedrock Edition runs on Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, iPhone, iPad and Android. It has the Marketplace for skins and worlds, and it lets friends play together across devices.
  • On PC you get both. Buying Minecraft for Windows gives you Java and Bedrock in one launcher for $29.99.

Is Minecraft Cross Platform?

Yes, for Bedrock Edition. Players on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, phones, tablets and Windows can join the same worlds and servers. You need a free Microsoft account to play online together. Java Edition players can only play with other Java players, so a friend on a console cannot join a Java server. For the step-by-step setup on each device, see our guide on how to play Minecraft with friends.

Can You Play Minecraft for Free?

  • Minecraft Classic: the 2009 creative mode with 32 blocks, free in any web browser at classic.minecraft.net.
  • Free trial: a time limited trial is available on some devices before you buy.
  • Minecraft Education: available to many schools through their Microsoft 365 education accounts.

Anything else that promises the full game for free is not official and may carry malware, so download Minecraft only from minecraft.net or your device’s store.

Minecraft Updates in 2026

Mojang now releases several smaller game drops a year instead of one big update, and version numbers follow the year: 26.1 is the first drop of 2026.

  • Tiny Takeover (Java 26.1): released March 24, 2026.
  • Chaos Cubed (Java 26.2): released June 16, 2026. It added the underground Sulfur Caves biome with gas pools and geysers, the friendly Sulfur Cube mob that changes its powers based on what it absorbs, and new sulfur and cinnabar blocks.
  • Third drop of 2026 (Java 26.3, Bedrock 26.50): brings the autumn coloured Dappled Forest biome with poplar trees, shelf mushrooms, abandoned camps, and wool stairs and slabs.

Easy Minecraft House Ideas for Beginners

  • Starter cabin: a 7 by 7 oak log frame with spruce planks, a stone floor and glass panes. Quick to build on your first night.
  • Hillside house: dig into the side of a hill and add a front wall and door. Safe from mobs and it saves materials.
  • Treehouse: build a platform in a jungle or dark oak tree and reach it with ladders or a spiral staircase.
  • Modern house: white concrete, large glass walls and a flat roof with a pool.
  • Castle: stone brick walls, towers on each corner and a gate with iron bars. Great for a survival base later on.

Light up the inside with torches or lanterns so hostile mobs cannot spawn in your house.

Minecraft Mobs You Will Meet First

  • Creeper: the silent green mob that explodes. Back away when you hear it hiss.
  • Zombie and Skeleton: appear at night and in dark caves. Skeletons shoot arrows from range.
  • Villager: lives in villages and trades items for emeralds.
  • Axolotl: a cute water mob found in lush caves that helps you fight underwater.
  • Warden: a blind but very strong mob in the Deep Dark. Sneak to avoid waking it.
