GTA 6 Wildlife and Animals: What Has Been Revealed?

GTA 6 has a full wildlife system, and it is much bigger than anything the series has had before. Rockstar has confirmed that the state of Leonida is home to more than 170 animal species, including over 60 kinds of birds and more than 30 land mammals. Around 50 of those species have been spotted so far in the official trailers, screenshots and preview footage, from alligators wandering into shops to deer drinking from streams in the mountains. This page tracks every GTA 6 animal that has been revealed, where each one lives, and what is still unconfirmed.
Wildlife is tied closely to the map itself. Most land animals cluster in the wild regions away from Vice City, so it helps to know the GTA 6 map locations before you go looking for them.
GTA 6 Animals Confirmed by Rockstar: Over 170 Species in Leonida
The headline number comes from Rockstar itself. In a September 2026 Game Informer cover story, Rockstar confirmed that Leonida holds over 170 animal species, with more than 60 bird species and over 30 land mammals, plus fish, reptiles and marine life. The animals were modelled on Florida’s real ecosystems, which is why the list leans so heavily into swamp, coast and Everglades-style species.
Rockstar also confirmed that some animals can be tracked, and that trackable animals are sorted into three rarity tiers: Rare, Discoverable and Legendary. That is a direct evolution of the animal compendium system from Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar is keeping the identity of the Legendary animals secret until launch, so nobody outside the studio knows which species hold the top tier yet.
Only around 50 species have been identified publicly so far. That means roughly 120 species in the finished game have never been shown, and the list below will keep growing as Rockstar releases more footage before the GTA 6 launch on November 19, 2026.
Every Animal Spotted in GTA 6 Trailers and Screenshots
Everything in this section has been seen in official material: the two trailers, Rockstar’s screenshots and the official Extended Look footage. Frame by frame community analysis has pinned down the following species.
Land mammals
- Deer (including Key deer): seen relaxing and drinking from a stream in Mount Kalaga National Park screenshots
- Wild boar: seen running off during a chase sequence in the second trailer, with Jason piloting a Buzzard
- Raccoon: rummaging through a trash can in the second trailer, and running alongside bikers in a Mount Kalaga screenshot
- Cougar (Florida panther): stalking deer in a Mount Kalaga screenshot and roaming a peak in another
- Bobcat: a dead bobcat lies on a bench next to hunters in a Grassrivers screenshot
- Beaver: a pair spotted in a Grassrivers screenshot
- Dogs: a Chihuahua running with its owner on Vice Beach in the first trailer, plus a Dobermann, a Rottweiler, a German Shepherd and a miniature pinscher in later material
- Cat: cleaning itself on top of an ATM inside a store in the second trailer
Reptiles
- American alligator: the most shown animal in the game, covered in its own section below
- Green iguana: seen in several screenshots, including one wearing a small shirt outside Jason’s house
- Snakes: a snake enclosure sits in Jason’s safehouse at the end of the second trailer
Birds
- American flamingo: wading and flying in flocks over the wetlands in the opening shots of the first trailer
- Brown pelican: flying over the ocean in the first trailer
- Roseate spoonbill, mottled duck, herring gull and cranes: identified among the water birds in trailer and screenshot analysis
- Eagles: reported from official material by several animal trackers, matching the bald eagle artwork Rockstar’s Florida setting suggests
- Bats: spotted in Vice City night scenes
Marine life
- Bottlenose dolphin: jumping in the ocean in trailer footage
- Tiger shark: seen in one of the opening shots of the first trailer
- West Indian manatee: confirmed across several independent sources
- Loggerhead sea turtle and eels: identified in official material
Alligators in GTA 6: The Animal That Walks Into Stores
The alligator is the face of GTA 6 wildlife. Alligators appear all over the official footage: sliding through the Grassrivers swamps, floating in residential pools, crossing suburban streets, and in the most shared moment of the first trailer, walking straight through the door of a convenience store while customers scatter.
That behaviour is the point. Rockstar is treating the alligator as a hazard that follows you out of the wilderness and into normal life, exactly the way alligators behave in real Florida. Expect them to be dangerous at close range in the water and on riverbanks, and treat any “empty” swamp as occupied until you have checked it. The store scene also appears in the GTA 6 launch trailer breakdown, where we went through the first trailer shot by shot.
Where to Find Wildlife on the GTA 6 Map
Grassrivers is the wildlife capital of Leonida. This Everglades-style wetland region between Vice City and Port Gellhorn holds the alligators, flamingos, beavers, bobcats, spoonbills, ducks and herons, and it is where most trailer wildlife shots were taken.
Mount Kalaga National Park is the big land-mammal region: deer, cougars, raccoons and boar have all been spotted there, and Rockstar lists it as the centre of the game’s outdoor recreation.
Vice City and the beaches are domestic-animal territory: dogs on Vice Beach, cats in stores, iguanas around houses, bats at night, and the occasional alligator that has wandered far from home.
The ocean and the Leonida Keys hold the marine list: dolphins, tiger sharks, manatees and sea turtles. Sharks make swimming and diving a risk in open water, so boats matter in GTA 6 in a way they never did in GTA 5.
Hunting in GTA 6: What Is Confirmed and What Is Not
Hunting is a confirmed side activity in GTA 6. It is officially listed on Rockstar’s website, and Mount Kalaga National Park is described as the main hunting and outdoor recreation zone. The tracking system and the Rare, Discoverable and Legendary tiers confirm that hunting and studying animals is a real system, not background decoration.
What Rockstar has not published yet: the full list of huntable species, what hunting yields (money, crafting materials or completion progress), and whether hunting counts toward 100% completion. Domestic animals, marine life and protected species may exist only as ambient life rather than valid targets. Fishing is widely reported from leaked footage and is very likely in the game, but Rockstar has not detailed fishing mechanics officially, so treat fishing details as unconfirmed for now.
One more name to file under unconfirmed: POACH (Protection of Animals and Controlled Hunting), an in-game wildlife enforcement group referenced in leaked files. If it is real, it suggests anti-poaching missions or wildlife ranger encounters, but Rockstar has never mentioned it, so it stays a leak until launch.
Dangerous Animals in GTA 6
Four spotted species are genuine threats. Alligators are territorial in water and fast over short distances on land. Tiger sharks patrol the open ocean. Cougars stalk prey in Mount Kalaga, and the screenshot of one watching deer suggests stealth predator behaviour rather than a simple attack trigger. Wild boar charge when cornered in most games that model them, and snakes are present even if their exact behaviour is unknown. None of these behaviours have been fully detailed by Rockstar, so the safe approach at launch is simple: give every large animal distance until you know how it reacts.
Can You Have Pets in GTA 6?
Rockstar has not confirmed a pet system. There are, however, three strong hints. In the official Extended Look footage, Jason pets a dog, which shows animal interaction exists beyond hunting. The snake enclosure in Jason’s safehouse at the end of the second trailer suggests at least one kept animal in the story. And the iguana wearing a shirt outside Jason’s house appears in more than one of his screenshots, which fans read as a possible pet iguana. Until Rockstar says otherwise, pets are a cutscene and interaction feature, not a confirmed system you manage.
GTA 6 Animals Still Unconfirmed
Separate from everything above, older leak lists from the September 2022 footage mention cows, frogs, possums, rats, skunks and whales. None of those have appeared in any official trailer, screenshot or preview since, so they are not counted as revealed. The same goes for the reported zoo and aquarium locations: interesting if true, but not something Rockstar has shown. This page will be updated as official material confirms or removes them.
GTA 6 Animals FAQs
What animals are in GTA 6?
Rockstar has confirmed over 170 animal species in GTA 6, including 60+ bird species and 30+ land mammals. Around 50 species have been spotted in official trailers and screenshots so far, including alligators, deer, raccoons, cougars, wild boar, flamingos, dolphins, tiger sharks, manatees, sea turtles, iguanas, snakes and several dog breeds.
Are there alligators in GTA 6?
Yes. The American alligator is the most featured animal in GTA 6’s official footage. Alligators appear in the Grassrivers swamps, in residential pools and suburbs, and one famously walks into a convenience store in the first trailer. Treat them as dangerous at close range, especially in the water.
Can you hunt animals in GTA 6?
Yes. Hunting is a confirmed side activity officially listed by Rockstar, centred on Mount Kalaga National Park. Animals can be tracked and are sorted into Rare, Discoverable and Legendary rarity tiers. Rockstar has not yet published the full list of huntable species or what hunting rewards.
Are there legendary animals in GTA 6?
Yes. Rockstar has confirmed that trackable animals fall into Rare, Discoverable and Legendary tiers, similar to Red Dead Redemption 2. The identities of the Legendary animals are being kept secret until launch, so no confirmed list of them exists yet.
Can you have a pet in GTA 6?
A pet system is not confirmed. There are hints: Jason pets a dog in the official Extended Look footage, a snake enclosure sits in Jason’s safehouse in the second trailer, and a shirt-wearing iguana appears repeatedly near Jason’s house. For now, pets appear to be story and interaction details rather than a confirmed feature.
How many animals are in GTA 6 in total?
Over 170 species, according to Rockstar. That includes more than 60 bird species and over 30 land mammals, plus fish, reptiles and marine life. Only around 50 species have been publicly identified so far, so roughly 120 species remain unrevealed before the November 19, 2026 launch.
