  • Android: in your keyboard settings (for example Gboard), add the Urdu language.

Online Urdu Typing Practice Tips

Practice a few minutes every day rather than one long session. Read the whole word before you type it, keep your eyes on the screen and use the 1 minute test to measure progress. If you type for exams or office work, finish with a 5 minute test to build stamina.

What Is a Good Urdu Typing Speed?

A good Urdu typing speed is 20 to 29 words per minute for everyday typing, and 30 words per minute or more counts as fast. This test rates scores in bands, from under 10 words per minute for beginners up to 40 and above for very fast typists.

Under 10 WPMGetting started
10 to 19 WPMImproving
20 to 29 WPMGood for everyday Urdu typing
30 to 39 WPMFast
40 WPM and aboveVery fast

Many clerk and data entry posts in Pakistan ask for about 25 to 30 words per minute in Urdu, and past Punjab Public Service Commission adverts for Junior Clerk posts set 25 words per minute as the minimum. Requirements change from one advert to another, so always check the speed named in the job advert you are applying for.

Phonetic and Standard Urdu Keyboards: What Is the Difference?

A phonetic Urdu keyboard places each Urdu letter on the English key with a similar sound, while a standard Urdu keyboard uses its own fixed layout where the same English keys produce different Urdu letters. Both layouts work with this test.

  • Phonetic layout: pressing A gives Alif and pressing B gives Bay, so beginners can guess most keys from the sound of the letter.
  • Standard layout: the key positions follow the Windows Urdu layout, where pressing A gives Meem and pressing B gives Sheen, so the layout has to be learned by position.
  • Which one to choose: pick the layout you will use in your exam or office work, because switching layouts resets your speed while your fingers relearn the positions.

The phonetic layout used in Pakistan is based on the phonetic version released by the Centre for Research in Urdu Language Processing, known as CRULP. This test checks the Urdu letters you type and accepts common Arabic look-alike letters.

Urdu Typing Speed in WPM, CPM and Accuracy

Urdu typing speed on this test is shown in words per minute, or WPM, and as an accuracy percentage. Some other tests also show CPM, which means characters per minute, and the two speed figures are linked by the same five character rule.

WPMCorrect characters divided by five, then divided by the minutes typed
CPMThe number of correct characters typed in one minute
AccuracyThe share of your typing that matches the test text

Because one word counts as five correct characters, a score of 20 WPM equals about 100 correct characters per minute, and 30 WPM equals about 150. This test counts correct characters only, so a fast score with many mistakes will read lower than a slower score typed cleanly.

Accuracy matters alongside speed. The green and red words in the test show which words were right and which were wrong as you typed.

Good to Know

Which Urdu keyboard works with this test?

Any Urdu keyboard works with this test, including phonetic layouts on Windows and the Urdu keyboards built into Android and iPhone. The test compares the Urdu letters you type, and it also accepts common look-alike letters, such as Arabic ي for Urdu ی and Arabic ك for Urdu ک.

How is Urdu typing speed measured?

Urdu typing speed is measured in words per minute in the same way as an English test. Every five correct characters, including spaces, count as one word, and that total is divided by the number of minutes you typed. Only correct characters are counted, so words with mistakes do not add to your speed.

Why does the text look different on my device?

The text can look different because the page uses a Nastaliq style Urdu font, and your device may replace it with its own Urdu font if that font cannot load. The test works the same in either font.

What is a good Urdu typing speed?

A good Urdu typing speed is 20 to 29 words per minute for everyday typing, and 30 words per minute or more is fast. On the bands used by this test, 40 words per minute and above is very fast. Many clerk and data entry posts ask for about 25 to 30 words per minute, so check the job advert for the exact figure.
