Classic Klondike. Build the four suits from Ace to King on the top-right piles. Drag cards, or just tap a card and it jumps to the best spot. Tap the deck to draw.
How to Play Solitaire
- Build four piles on the top right, one per suit, from Ace up to King.
- In the seven columns, stack cards in descending order with alternating colours (red on black, black on red).
- Tap the deck to draw a card. When the deck is empty, tap it again to recycle the drawn cards.
- Drag a card to move it, or simply tap it and it jumps to the best spot. Use Undo if you change your mind.
- Only a King (or a stack starting with a King) can go into an empty column.
Controls
Drag cards with the mouse, or click a card to auto-move it. Click the deck to draw.
Tap a card to send it to the best spot, or drag it. Tap the deck to draw.
Tips to Win
- Always move Aces and Twos to the foundations as soon as you can.
- Try to uncover face-down cards in the biggest columns first.
- Only move a King into an empty column when it helps you free another card.
- Use Undo freely to test different ideas.
Klondike Solitaire Rules at a Glance
Klondike is the classic solitaire game. The whole setup fits on one screen, and the rules take a minute to learn.
| Deck | 52 cards |
|---|---|
| Layout | 7 tableau columns, 28 cards dealt |
| Goal | Build all four foundations from Ace to King by suit |
| Stock | 24 cards, drawn one at a time in this version |
Draw 1 or Draw 3: Which Should You Play?
Klondike deals come in two flavours. In Draw 1 you turn over one stock card at a time, so every card gets its chance on every pass through the stock. It is the friendlier mode and the best place to learn, because fewer cards stay buried. In Draw 3 you turn over three cards at once but can only play the top one, which keeps more cards locked away and makes the game noticeably harder. Draw 3 is the classic rule set most long-time players grew up with. If you are new, start with Draw 1 until you are finishing games regularly, then switch to Draw 3 for the real challenge. The game above plays Draw 1, so it is the friendly version to learn on.
Are All Solitaire Games Winnable?
No. Some Klondike deals cannot be won no matter how well you play, because the cards you need are buried in the wrong order from the start. Studies using solver software put the share of winnable deals at roughly nine out of ten for Draw 1 and about eight out of ten for Draw 3, and real players win far fewer than that, since one wrong move can close off a deal that was technically winnable. So a loss does not always mean a mistake. If a game feels completely stuck, it may genuinely be unwinnable: deal a fresh one rather than fighting it.
Klondike Solitaire Words Explained
- Tableau: the seven columns where most of the game happens.
- Foundations: the four piles at the top, one for each suit, built from Ace to King.
- Stock: the face down deck you draw from.
- Waste: the face up pile of cards you have drawn.
- Build: placing a card one rank lower and of the opposite colour onto a tableau card.
A Smart Order of Moves
When several moves are possible, a good order is: first play any Ace or Two to the foundations, then make any move that turns over a face down card, then free an empty column, and only then draw from the stock. Moving cards to the foundations too quickly can also hurt, because you may need a red Six to hold a black Five later. Keep low cards in the tableau until both colours of the rank below are safe.

Yes. The game above is completely free to play in your browser. There is nothing to download and no account to create.
What is the difference between Draw 1 and Draw 3?

Can I play solitaire on my phone?
Yes. The board scales to your screen and you can tap or drag cards, so it works on phones and tablets as well as computers.
Is Klondike the same as classic solitaire?
Yes. Klondike is the proper name of the classic solitaire game most people know, the one with seven tableau columns and four foundation piles.
