Tips for Typing Test
- Keep your eyes on the screen, not on your fingers.
- Rest your fingers on the home row (A S D F and J K L ;) and return to it after each key.
- Accuracy first: a mistake costs more time than typing a little slower.
- Take the 1 minute test daily and the 5 minute test once a week to see real progress.
1 Minute, 3 Minute and 5 Minute Typing Tests
A 1 minute typing test is quick and great for daily practice. A 3 minute test gives a steadier score, and a 5 minute typing test shows the speed you can keep up for longer, like in an exam or at work. The 30 second test is a fast warm up.
How the Typing Speed Test Measures WPM and Accuracy
- WPM: correct characters (with spaces) divided by 5, divided by the minutes typed.
- Raw speed: the same count for everything you typed, mistakes included.
- Accuracy: the share of key presses that matched the text.
- Best score: saved for each test length and text type on your device.
Typing Test Results: What Your Score Means
- Under 20 WPM: getting started.
- 20 to 34 WPM: improving.
- 35 to 49 WPM: good speed for everyday typing.
- 50 to 69 WPM: fast.
- 70 to 89 WPM: very fast.
- 90 WPM and above: outstanding.
If your accuracy is under 90%, slow down a little. Your speed will grow faster once mistakes drop.
Ten Finger Typing Practice
Ten finger typing, also called touch typing, means every finger has its own keys and you do not look down. Start with the home row, keep your wrists level and use the 1 minute test to check your progress each day. The Paragraphs text is good practice for capital letters and punctuation.
Average Typing Speed: How Your Score Compares
The average adult typing speed is about 40 WPM, worked out on the same standard this test uses, where five characters count as one word. A score near 40 WPM means you type as fast as a typical adult, and every point above it puts you ahead of more people.
| Under 40 WPM | Still building speed, normal for new touch typists |
| About 40 WPM | The average adult typist |
| 40 to 50 WPM | Enough for most general office and admin work |
| 65 to 75 WPM | Professional typists, such as transcription and executive support roles |
| 80 WPM and above | Top tier speed, reached by a small share of typists |
On this test, 35 to 49 WPM is rated good for everyday typing. That fits the general picture, because the good band starts just under the adult average and runs above it.
Raw Speed, Gross WPM and Net WPM: What the Numbers Mean
Your result shows two speeds. WPM counts only the characters you typed correctly, while raw speed counts everything you typed, mistakes included. Other typing sites call these two figures net WPM and gross WPM.
- Gross WPM (raw speed): every character you typed, divided by five and by the minutes, with no penalty for errors.
- Net WPM: the effective speed left after mistakes are taken away. Your WPM on this test works this way, because words with mistakes add nothing to it.
- The gap: the wider the gap between raw speed and WPM, the more your mistakes are costing you.
Net WPM is the figure employers usually ask for, so quote your WPM together with your accuracy when you share a score.
Why Your WPM Changes From One Typing Test to Another
The same typist rarely scores the same WPM on two different tests, because sites score in different ways, set different texts and run for different lengths. A different score usually says more about the test than your typing.
- Scoring rules: some tests count every character you type, while this test counts correct characters only, so mistakes lower the score here.
- The text: common words are quicker to type than paragraphs with capital letters and punctuation, and number groups are slower still for most people.
- Test length: a 30 second test rewards a short burst of speed, while a 5 minute test shows the pace you can hold, and scores lower.
- Your setup: an unfamiliar keyboard or a phone screen slows typists down.
For a fair comparison, always retake the same test, at the same length, with the same text type. Your best score on this page is saved for every length and text type, so progress is easy to spot.
