Minecraft First Night Guide: What to Do on Day One in Survival

A new Minecraft survival world gives you about ten minutes of daylight before zombies, skeletons and creepers start to spawn. This guide shows you exactly what to do with that time so you reach the morning alive, with tools, food and a safe place to sleep. If you are still deciding between Java and Bedrock or want to know what is new in 2026, start with our Minecraft guide first.

The plan below works on every version of the game: PC, console, phone and tablet. Button names differ a little between devices, but the steps are the same.

How Long Is a Day in Minecraft?

One full Minecraft day lasts 20 real minutes. Daytime is about 10 minutes, sunset about 1.5 minutes, night about 7 minutes and sunrise about 1.5 minutes. Hostile mobs spawn in darkness, so the night is when most new players die. Your goal on day one is simple: be inside a lit, closed space or asleep in a bed before the sun goes down.

Step 1: Punch a Tree and Make Planks

Walk to the nearest tree and hold the attack button on the trunk to break logs. Collect 6 to 10 logs. Open your inventory and turn logs into planks: one log makes 4 planks of the same wood type.

  • Turn 4 planks into a crafting table using the 2 by 2 grid in your inventory.
  • Turn 2 planks into 4 sticks.
  • Place the crafting table on the ground. It gives you the full 3 by 3 crafting grid.

Step 2: Make Wooden Tools, Then Stone Tools Fast

Make a wooden pickaxe (3 planks across the top row, 2 sticks down the middle). Wooden tools break quickly, so use the pickaxe only to mine about 20 cobblestone from the nearest bare stone, cave mouth or hillside.

Now upgrade to stone. A stone pickaxe, stone axe and stone sword each use cobblestone in place of planks with the same stick layout. Stone tools last more than twice as long as wooden ones. Our crafting recipes for beginners list shows every shape you need in the first few days.

Step 3: Find Food Before You Get Hungry

Your hunger bar drops as you run, jump and mine. When it is low your health stops healing. Good early food sources:

  • Cows, pigs, sheep and chickens: raw meat works, but cooked meat restores far more hunger.
  • Apples: sometimes drop when you break oak and dark oak leaves.
  • Wheat seeds: break tall grass for seeds and plant them later for bread.

Avoid eating rotten flesh from zombies unless you have nothing else, because it can give you the Hunger effect.

Step 4: Get Three Wool for a Bed

A bed is the best tool on day one. Sleeping skips the night, and the bed also sets your respawn point. Craft a bed from 3 wool across the top row and 3 planks along the middle. Get wool by killing sheep (1 wool each) or by using shears on them (1 to 3 wool each without hurting them).

If you cannot find sheep, do not wander too far from your base looking for them. A safe shelter is more important than a bed on the first night.

Step 5: Make Torches

Torches light up your shelter and stop most hostile mobs from spawning around it. One coal on top of one stick makes 4 torches.

  • Look for black specks on exposed stone. That is coal ore, and a wooden or stone pickaxe can mine it.
  • No coal nearby? Craft a furnace from 8 cobblestone, then smelt logs with planks as fuel. Each log becomes charcoal, which works exactly like coal for torches.

Step 6: Build or Dig a Simple Shelter

You do not need a nice house on night one. You need four walls, a roof, a door and light. The two fastest options:

  • Dig into a hill: mine a 3 block deep room into the side of a hill, place a door at the entrance and put torches inside. Cheap and very safe.
  • Dirt or plank hut: build a 5 by 5 room, two blocks high, with a roof. Craft a door from 6 planks (it makes 3 doors).

Close every gap. Spiders can climb walls and get in through a hole in the roof. If you have no door yet, just block the entrance with dirt and dig out in the morning. When you have more time, our hub has easy Minecraft house ideas for beginners.

Step 7: Use the Night Wisely

If you have a bed, sleep in it as soon as it gets dark and you will wake at sunrise. If you do not have a bed, stay inside and use the time:

  • Smelt raw meat in the furnace so you have cooked food.
  • Craft a chest from 8 planks and store anything you are not using.
  • Dig straight down a few blocks inside your shelter (never directly under your feet) to find more stone and coal.
  • Plan where you will look for iron tomorrow.

Mobs to Watch Out For on Your First Night

  • Zombie: slow and walks straight at you. Easy to beat with a stone sword.
  • Skeleton: shoots arrows from range. Break line of sight by going behind blocks.
  • Creeper: green, silent, and it explodes when close. If you hear a hiss, run backwards right away.
  • Spider: climbs walls and is fast. Usually friendly in daylight unless you hit it.
  • Enderman: tall and black. Do not look directly at its face and it will leave you alone.

Common First Night Mistakes

  • Wandering too far from your base at sunset and getting lost. Note your coordinates or build a tall dirt pillar as a landmark.
  • Digging straight down under your own feet and falling into a cave or lava.
  • Leaving a gap in the wall or roof of your shelter.
  • Fighting a creeper up close with no armor.
  • Forgetting to place the bed, so you respawn at the world spawn far away.

What to Do on Day Two

On your second morning, go looking for iron ore (beige or orange specks in stone). Smelt it in your furnace to make iron ingots, then craft an iron pickaxe, a bucket (3 iron ingots) and a shield (6 planks and 1 iron ingot). With iron tools and a shield, caves become much safer and you can start a small farm. If you want quick commands for a creative test world, see our Minecraft commands cheat sheet.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the first night in Minecraft?

Night lasts about 7 real minutes, with about 1.5 minutes of sunset before it. A full day and night cycle is 20 minutes.

What should I craft first in Minecraft?

Craft planks, a crafting table and sticks first, then a wooden pickaxe so you can mine cobblestone for stone tools.

Can I skip the night without a bed?

No. Only sleeping in a bed skips the night. Without one, stay inside a closed, lit shelter until morning.

Do torches stop all mobs from spawning?

Torches stop most hostile mobs from spawning on lit blocks near them, but mobs can still walk in from dark areas, so keep your shelter closed.

Is Peaceful mode a good way to learn?

Yes. On Peaceful difficulty almost no hostile mobs spawn and your health and hunger refill on their own, so you can learn crafting and building without pressure.
