Brick Breaker Rules at a Glance
Brick Breaker is a paddle and ball arcade game: bounce the ball off the paddle, smash every brick in the wall, and do not let the ball fall past the paddle. Clear the whole wall to move on to the next, faster level.
| Paddle | Move it with the mouse, your finger or the left and right arrow keys |
|---|---|
| Launch | Tap or press Space to set the ball moving |
| Goal | Break every brick in the wall to clear the level |
| Lives | Three. You lose one each time the ball falls past your paddle |
| Tough bricks | Darker bricks need more than one hit before they break |
| Bonus | Lucky hits can release extra balls |
| Levels | Each new level is faster than the one before |
How the Levels Get Harder
Every level you clear makes the next one harder in two ways: the ball moves faster, and the wall holds more bricks that take several hits to break.
- Faster ball: each cleared level raises the pace, so you have less time to line the paddle up under each return.
- Tougher bricks: darker bricks need more than one hit, so start on them early instead of leaving a hard shell for the end of the level.
- Trapped ball: a wall of tough bricks can keep the ball bouncing above it for a long time, so open a gap at one side to let it through and work from behind.
The three lives you start with have to last the whole run, so the deeper you go, the more each mistake costs.
Getting the Ball Behind the Wall
The quickest way to clear a level is to open a gap at one side and send the ball through it. Once the ball is behind the bricks, it bounces between the top wall and the bricks and breaks many of them without you doing anything. Aim the paddle edge toward the weakest column, then keep the paddle centred and wait.
Brick Breaker, Breakout and Arkanoid: What Is the Difference?
Brick Breaker, Breakout and Arkanoid are three names from one family of paddle and ball games, and the play is nearly the same in all three. What changed over the years was the name, the look and the extras added on top.
| Breakout | The 1976 Atari original that started the family. One paddle, one ball, one wall of bricks. |
|---|---|
| Arkanoid | The 1986 follow up that added power ups, new brick types and set levels. |
| Brick Breaker | The name most modern browser versions use, including this one: classic rules with faster levels and extra balls. |
Different names, same simple test: keep the ball alive and empty the wall.
Brick Breaker and the Breakout Classics
Brick breaking games go back to Breakout, the 1976 arcade game from Atari, and Arkanoid from 1986, which added power ups and new brick types. The simple idea of a paddle, a ball and a wall of bricks has stayed popular for decades. Our Brick Breaker is an original version with stronger bricks, extra balls and faster levels.
Good to Know
How many lives do you get in Brick Breaker?
You start with three lives in Brick Breaker, and you lose one each time the ball falls past your paddle. The game ends when all three lives are gone, so every return you miss costs a third of your run.
How do I control where the ball goes?
Where the ball lands on your paddle decides the angle it leaves at: a hit near the middle sends it almost straight up, and a hit near either edge sends it off at a sharp angle. Use edge hits to aim at side gaps and centre hits to play safe.
What bonuses can you get in Brick Breaker?
Extra balls are the bonus in this version of Brick Breaker: lucky hits on the bricks can release extra balls into play. Each extra ball can break more bricks and build your score while it stays alive.
What happens when you clear every brick?
Clearing every brick finishes the level and moves you on to the next one, which plays faster. The run continues in the same way, level after level, until your three lives run out.
Can I play Brick Breaker on my phone?
Yes, Brick Breaker runs in the browser on phones and tablets as well as on laptops and desktop computers, with nothing to download and no sign-up. On a touch screen you drag your finger to move the paddle and tap to launch the ball.
Is my Brick Breaker progress saved?
Your best scores are saved in your own browser on this device. Clearing your browser data will reset them.
