Silent Hill f Release Date, Platforms and Editions
Silent Hill f launched worldwide on September 25, 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, and PC. Owners of the Digital Deluxe Edition could start two days earlier, on September 23, thanks to its 48 hour early access. The game was a major hit for the series: it sold more than one million copies on its first day, the fastest start in Silent Hill history, and passed two million copies by April 2026.
It is a completely standalone story, so you do not need to have played any earlier Silent Hill game first. If you are playing on console, our guide to the best PS5 settings to change will help you set up performance and controller options before you start.
Silent Hill f Story Explained (Light Spoilers)
The game is set in Ebisugaoka, a fictional mountain town in 1960s Japan, modelled on the real town of Kanayama in Gifu Prefecture. You play Hinako Shimizu, a high school student crushed by the expectations placed on her, including pressure toward a future and a marriage she does not want. The story is written by Ryukishi07, the creator of Higurashi When They Cry, with music by series composer Akira Yamaoka and Kensuke Inage.
After a bitter argument at home, Hinako meets her friends Shu, Rinko and Sakuko in town, and a thick fog rolls in. Flowers bloom where they should not, people change into grotesque monsters, and Hinako keeps slipping into a second world, a Dark Shrine where a calm man wearing a Fox Mask guides her through rituals she does not understand. The horror is personal: the monsters, the shrine and the marriage imagery all connect back to Hinako’s fear of losing herself to the life others have chosen for her, and the endings decide whether she submits, rebels or finds her own answer.
Gameplay: Melee Combat, Sanity and Focus Explained
There are no guns in Silent Hill f. Combat is melee only, built around pipes, bats, blades and other improvised weapons, and every weapon has durability, so it will break if you lean on it too long. Attacks and dodges use stamina, a perfectly timed dodge slows the action and opens the enemy up, and some enemy attacks flash a warning that lets you land a counter if you react in time. Running from a fight is often the smartest option, because healing items and spare weapons are limited.
Hinako also has a Sanity meter alongside her health. Sanity drains when she witnesses horrors and takes certain attacks, and it powers Focus: hold Focus to slow time and read enemy moves, which makes counters and escapes far easier. At hokora shrines you can offer items you find to earn Faith, then spend that Faith on Ema upgrades that raise health, stamina and Sanity, and on Omamori, equipable charms that give passive boosts such as faster stamina recovery or extra damage.
Puzzle Difficulty, Exploration and Beginner Tips
Unusually, Silent Hill f lets you set Action difficulty and Puzzle difficulty separately, across three levels each: Story, Hard and Lost in the Fog. Puzzle solutions actually change between difficulties, so a code or arrangement that works on Story will not work on Hard. Read every document you find, because puzzle clues live in the notes, and check Hinako’s journal, which updates with hints and her own thoughts on the story.
A first playthrough takes around 12 hours, and it is only the beginning. New Game Plus adds new cutscenes, documents, Omamori and whole side objectives that do not exist on a first run, and the game is designed to be replayed: you will need at least three playthroughs to see every ending.
All 5 Silent Hill f Endings and How to Unlock Them
Spoiler warning: this section names every ending and its requirements. Your first playthrough always ends the same way, no matter what you do. The other four endings only exist in New Game Plus, and the true ending needs a save file that already has at least two of the main endings. One rule applies to almost every New Game Plus ending: never use Red Capsules, the healing pills Hinako carries. Eating even one locks you back into the default ending.
| Ending | How to unlock it |
|---|---|
| 1. Coming Home to Roost | Finish the game once. This ending is forced on a first playthrough. |
| 2. Fox’s Wedding | New Game Plus: use no Red Capsules, purify the Sacred Sword (or never pick it up), and obtain the Agura no Hotei-sama. |
| 3. The Fox Wets Its Tail | New Game Plus: use no Red Capsules, take the Sacred Sword and do not purify it. |
| 4. Ebisugaoka in Silence (true ending) | New Game Plus 2, on a save with at least two main endings done: use no Red Capsules, purify the Sacred Sword, and offer your Brooch to the Ancient Jizo Statue. |
| 5. The Great Space Invasion! (UFO ending) | New Game Plus: listen to every UFO radio broadcast, find all 3 movie posters in order, then find the movie review. |
The Fastest Route to Every Ending: The 3 Playthrough Plan
Playthrough one is simple: play normally, use whatever items you need, and take the forced Coming Home to Roost ending. Finishing the game unlocks New Game Plus and an Endings menu that lists the requirements in game.
On your New Game Plus run, stop using Red Capsules completely and work on the Sacred Sword quest: offer the five lost items (the Faded Bride Doll, Rusted Flask, Broken Japanese Geta Sandals, Cracked Hibachi Brazier and Dad’s Old Kitchen Knife) at the Jizo statues to claim the sword, then solve the Crimson Water puzzle to purify it. Make a manual save before you collect the Agura no Hotei-sama near the end, because you can branch to two endings from that one save. With the sword purified and the Agura in your inventory, finish the game for Fox’s Wedding. Then reload the save and this time take the Sacred Sword without purifying it, and finish again for The Fox Wets Its Tail. The UFO ending can also be done on any New Game Plus run if you follow the radio broadcasts and posters. Your ending is locked in once you enter the Shimizu Residence, so keep your manual saves before that point.
Your third run, on the clear save that now holds two endings, is the true ending run: no Red Capsules, purify the Sacred Sword again, and this time offer your Brooch to the Ancient Jizo Statue to unlock Ebisugaoka in Silence, the ending that resolves Hinako’s story and the curse over the town.
Should You Play Silent Hill f?
Yes, especially if you like story-driven horror. It is the boldest Silent Hill in years: a new country, a new heroine, melee combat that keeps you vulnerable, and an endings structure that genuinely rewards replaying instead of padding the game. If you finish Hinako’s story and want another atmospheric single-player journey, keep an eye on our Edge of Memories guide, which covers the next big story RPG launch on December 3, 2026.
