The Best Order to Guess Letters in Hangman

The best order to guess letters in Hangman is most common first: start with E and the other vowels, then move to common consonants, and save rare letters for last.

  • Start with E: E is the most common letter in English, so it appears in more words than any other letter.
  • Cover the vowels: nearly every English word holds at least one vowel, so A, O, I and U are cheap ways to open up the shape of the word.
  • Add common consonants: T, R, N, S and L turn up in most words and often complete the pattern.
  • Think in whole words: once three or four letters show, list words that fit the blanks and the category, then test the letters those words need.
  • Save rare letters: J, Q, X and Z appear in very few words, so guessing them early usually wastes a guess.

Using Word Patterns to Solve Hangman

Look at where the revealed letters sit. A word ending in a blank after "IN" is often "ING". A Q is almost always followed by U. If a short word has one vowel revealed in the middle, try consonants that commonly surround it, such as T, N, S and R. In the Countries category, endings like "IA" and "LAND" are common.

What Makes a Hangman Word Hard?

The hardest words in Hangman are short words built from rare letters, such as JAZZ and QUIZ. Word length on its own does not make a word hard, because a long word made of common letters gives you far more chances to reveal it.

  • Rare letters stay hidden: good players guess J, Q, X and Z last, so words built on them keep their blanks for longer.
  • Few different letters help you: BANANA holds only three different letters, so one correct guess fills half the word.
  • Common letters fall fast: a long word such as ASTONISHED is built from the most common letters in English and usually opens up within a few guesses.
  • The category cuts the list: in Countries, a long answer is far more likely to be a well known place than a rare word, so guess its common letters first.

Hangman in the Classroom

Hangman has been a pencil and paper game for well over a hundred years and is still a favourite with teachers. It practises spelling, vocabulary and letter frequency in a way that feels like a game. Play a few rounds of the Animals or Food category with younger children and let them say each guess out loud.

Good to Know

How many wrong guesses do you get in Hangman?

You get six wrong guesses in Hangman. Each wrong letter adds one part to the drawing, and the sixth wrong guess ends the round, so the word must be solved before the drawing is complete.

Which letters should I guess first in Hangman?

Guess E first, because E is the most common letter in English words and appears in more words than any other letter. Next try the other vowels and common letters such as A, R, I, O, T, N and S, and save rare letters like Q, X and Z for when the word is nearly clear.

What categories are in this Hangman game?

The categories in this Hangman game are Gaming, Animals, Food, Countries and Space. The category is a strong clue, so think of words that fit the topic and match the number of blanks before you spend guesses on rare letters.

Does a correct guess reveal every place the letter appears?

Yes, one correct guess reveals that letter in every place it appears in the word, all at once. This is why a word with the same letter several times is easier than it looks, because one good guess can fill three or four blanks in a single turn.

Can I play Hangman on my phone?

Yes, this Hangman game works on phones and tablets as well as on laptops and desktop computers. It runs in your browser with nothing to download and no sign-up, and you guess by tapping the letters on the on-screen keyboard.
