Merge tiles to reach 2048 · Works on mobile & desktop · No download

2048 is a hugely popular sliding puzzle game. Every move slides all the tiles on a 4×4 board in one direction, and when two tiles with the same number touch, they merge into one tile worth their sum. Keep merging 2s into 4s, 4s into 8s and so on, and try to create the legendary 2048 tile.

2048 is free to play on PlayQuestHQ with no download and no sign-up. It works on phones, tablets, laptops and desktop computers.

Tips to Win

  • Pick two main directions (for example down and left) and avoid the others.
  • Build a chain of decreasing numbers along one edge.
  • Do not fill the board with small tiles you cannot merge.

2048 Rules at a Glance

2048 is a single player puzzle played on a 4 by 4 board. You slide every tile in one direction, two tiles with the same number merge into one tile worth double, and the goal is to create the 2048 tile.

Common 2048 Mistakes That End a Run

Most 2048 runs end early for the same few reasons. The most common is the biggest tile leaving its corner, with a full board and split big tiles close behind.

  • Moving in all four directions: the biggest tile drifts toward the middle and blocks merges on every side of it.
  • Chasing every small merge: breaking an ordered row for an extra 8 or 16 points usually costs more space than it earns.
  • Letting the board fill up: with fewer than three empty squares, one unlucky new tile can leave no legal move at all.
  • Building two big tiles far apart: a 512 tile on each side of the board may never meet to form a 1024.
  • Playing too fast: quick swipes push tiles the wrong way and break the corner before you notice.

What Is a Good 2048 Score?

A good 2048 score depends on the biggest tile you reach. A first win at the 2048 tile usually scores just over 20,000 points, and scores grow quickly after that, because every merge pays out the full value of the new tile.

  • 512 or 1024 tile: a solid learning game. Scores sit in the low thousands while you practise the corner method.
  • 2048 tile: a win. The merges needed to build it alone add up to about 20,480 points.
  • 4096 tile: a strong game. Scores pass 45,000, and the board has to stay tidy for a long time.
  • 8192 tile: a rare result. Scores reach about 100,000, and very few players get this far.

The Corner Strategy Step by Step

  1. Choose a corner, for example bottom left, and keep your largest tile there.
  2. Mostly swipe down and left so the big tile never leaves the corner.
  3. Fill the bottom row with tiles in decreasing order from the corner outwards.
  4. Use right only when you must, and avoid up unless there is no other move.
  5. If a small tile lands in the corner, merge it back up as quickly as you can.

Where 2048 Came From

2048 was created by Italian developer Gabriele Cirulli and released as a free web game in March 2014. It became a viral hit within weeks and was soon copied onto phones everywhere. The goal has always been the same: slide numbered tiles on a 4 by 4 board and merge matching numbers until you build the 2048 tile.

Good to Know

What happens after you reach the 2048 tile?

You win, and the game lets you keep playing on the same board toward bigger tiles such as 4096 and 8192. Nothing resets when you reach 2048. Your score keeps growing with every merge, and the run only ends when the board is full and no two neighbouring tiles share a value.

What is the biggest tile you can make in 2048?

The biggest tile the rules allow is 131072. Building it would take a board holding 65536, 32768 and every smaller power of two at the same time, with no spare square to move in. In real games even 8192 is rare, and most strong players stop at 4096 or 8192.

Can I play 2048 on my phone?

Yes. 2048 plays well on phones and tablets in the browser. Swipe up, down, left or right on the board to slide the tiles, in the same way the arrow keys work on a computer. The board fits the smaller screen, so no app is needed.

Is 2048 a game of luck or skill?

2048 is mostly a game of skill. New tiles land at random, so luck decides where each 2 or 4 appears, but it does not decide what you do with them. Players who keep one corner, build ordered rows and protect empty squares win far more often than players who move at random.

Can you win every game of 2048?

No. Nobody wins every game of 2048, because new tiles appear in random squares and one badly placed 4 can block the merge you needed. Careful corner play still wins far more games than random moving, so treat a lost board as a lesson and start again.
